October 2011 - I realised I haven't updated this for some time!
The autobiography by Mick Tyler ex-SAS has been finished now for some time and has been selling really well. Mick's story is very understated, he's a modest man, but fascinating nonetheless, perhaps more so than the usual gung-ho SAS stories around. Who cares who wins is the unofficial moto. More books in the pipeline, and a contract with a newly formed publisher to produce all their books, the first one soon to be published. Several aspiring self-publishers are also in touch and I look forward to working on their books soon.
September 2009 - Picture Postcards of Herefordshire Churches completed
Finished this one and it's now awaiting a grant application and print. A lovely looking book, large, A4, and packed with colour illustration on virtually every page. Also finished an autobiography by Caleb Jackson which was fun to work on as he's an excellent writer and the story of his life is both hilarious and fascinating. And now started another by an ex-SAS soldier who went on after his service to found and run a survival training school in the Welsh mountains.
June 2009 - Another book published
Published another book, this time a novel, by a previously unpublished author. While it isn't my genre, I'm hoping it does well, if only because of the mass of work I did editing it. Now I'm working on a reference book of picture postcards of Herefordshire churches, which may not sound to many an interesting subject, but it's backed with history going back to the 12th century, and full of fascinating snippets gleaned from all over. A well researched book, with illustrations of all the postcards, and I have a feeling it is going to sell well both inside and outside Herefordshire. Publishing seems not to have been affected one bit in the current recession, let's hope it remains that way!
A new system
I had to buy a new computer as the old one, although still adequate and much faster and with more RAM than I've ever had before, was just not up to it; the latest software wouldn't run with the version of Windows, so to upgrade one I had to upgrade a lot more. Now, with a dual core processor and 2Gb of RAM, I feel I may have a breathing space before this one too is looking tired and inadequate and has to be replaced yet again. The old system sits, forlorn and unwanted, in the office, waiting for me to decide its fate. Will I consign it to the tip, where at least it will be recycled, keepit as a spare in case of problems [if it were ever needed, all the software would be out of date] give it away to someone poorer than me, or sell it for what it's worth, not much.
Publishing is a global business
We certainly live in the global village these days; dealing with publishers in India one minute, and the UK the next, corresponding with dozens of people in different countries. The emails flow, files are swapped, corrections can happen within minutes of being spotted, it's almost real time interactive. The advantage for clients is a fast turn round, rather than waiting for weeks while proofs are posted about and corrections done, a book can be completed in a week, although with such speed careful checking is vital as there's more chance of something being missed. Prices for all publishing services have got cheaper for the last ten years, making publishing an increasingly affordable project. This is probably largely due to India and China moving into the market. I'm currently working on a book of new poetry, of which more later. Some of the poems are scalp tinglingly good, in fact all of them are pretty good and I wouldn't be surprised if the book sold well.
